There are many, many different types of estate sale and liquidation companies to choose from in the DC area. Let’s face it. This is a very transient area and with our large military population, most families are on the move within 2-3 years.
So, how do you find the right company to help you sell your belongings?
Here’s something most people don’t want to hear: you need to have at least 2 companies stop by your home and do a consultation. That’s the best way to know which one you want to work with. Get a face to face and be HONEST.
Do you need to completely empty your home in a hurry? To sell your house and move away quickly? Are you holding on to collectibles in the hopes of getting top dollar and waiting for the right time? Did you already hold your own sales and just need help unloading the rest of your things? This will help the company know what your goals are.
It also helps to know the history and the story of your belongings — how did they end up here in Northern Virginia? Buyers may be curious to know how that signed artwork from an obscure artist ended up here. And, of course, there are times when such information is completely classified and no details about the family can be shared.
Company REVIEWS online:
This can be tricky. Being separated from your home, your well-loved items and perhaps heirlooms can be overwhelming and tough. There are many emotions involved with this process.
Sometimes these emotions pour over into our arena and we take the brunt of a frustrated family member being bombarded by lawyers or very unhappy relatives. Sometimes the family may still be in the grieving process. There are many variables involved with handling an estate sale and sometimes the company may receive a negative review because of many other factors other than their performance at a sale.
Meet with the owners or the consultation team and see if they are hardworking, honest, trustworthy individuals. Were the rest of the reviews positive? Did you connect with the team that came to your home? If so, this may be a better indicator of whom you should hire.
Also, understand 60-75% or your items will sell during an estate sale. Sometimes you can markdown items to $1, but the buyers aren’t out that week (check for Chocolate Fest, the Marine Corps Marathon, horrible weather, and the Jewelry Expo coming to town).
Most of the folks in this business have a true love for helping people declutter and liquidate their estates in a professional and caring manner. Many companies in this area even work together, go to each other’s sales and support each other by buying items. We donate needed items to charities in the area as well. We try to make sure everything from your home can be rehomed, reused, or recycled.
We go into each contract hoping to sell your belongings and help you transition to your new living situation. So, don’t just rely on the online reviews. Check with neighbors, friends and family to see who they have worked with.
Check for the company online and see where their name pops up — social media, Yelp, Google search, Yahoo search, EstateSales.net, Google+… Also, ask the companies for referrals.
